The Final Puzzle Piece

One school district in South Carolina is taking literacy very seriously because of the pandemic. District 55 of Laurens County South Carolina has installed Inchy the Bookworm Book Machines into all the elementary schools within their district. The final addition to the Inchy family was at Laurens County School 55, and the staff and students are overly excited for the addition.

Why Inchy?

The reasoning for this change in the district has been the declining literacy rates. Teachers and administrators took notice of the statistics of their district and knew a change had to be made. Reading, a fundamental skill that is applied to all other subjects like math, science, and social studies, needed to be improved district-wide, and superintendent of the Laurens County School district Dr. Ameca Thomas, saw an opportunity.

Of Inchy the Bookworm Book Vending Machine, Dr. Thomas commented that it is an “excellent tool to help literacy in our district.”

Yearning for Learning

The teachers and principal have taken notice of the excitement of their students. “They’re so excited, like ‘I got a token!’ Then they get to go visit the book vending machine.” Said Principal Randy Dendy. But Principal Dendy and the staff look forward to seeing the changes in the literacy program and the strides that the students will make. In order to aid the reading comprehension and attention of younger students, the district needed to make a change, and Inchy has helped the district create a yearning for learning.

“Anytime you can get students excited about learning, especially reading, it helps with those deficits that we, unfortunately, are facing due to [COVID-19].” Said Principal Dendy, speaking on the impression the book vending machines have left on his elementary school.
